My Walk Through the Book of Matthew by Annette Godtland

The Parable of the Mustard Seed (Matthew 13:31-32)

31Another parable He put forth to them, saying: "The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his field, 32which indeed is the least of all the seeds; but when it is grown it is greater than the herbs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and nest in its branches."

There are a couple things I really like about this parable. First it shows that the strength and support that we can receive from the kingdom of heaven is great. When planted and allowed to take root and grow, it's strength becomes awesome. It can be our support. It can be our shelter.

Sure there are other things that are tempting to rely on for our strength, support, and shelter. And they may seem adequate for some situations. But the kingdom of heaven is far greater than anything else here on earth. For the best in strength, support, and shelter, turn to the kingdom of heaven.

The other thing I really like about this parable is the mustard seed, the smallest of all seeds. Sometimes it seems like we are charged with doing such great things to help spread the kingdom of heaven. But really, even the tiniest thing we do can grow to become something large. We aren't charged with doing massive things. We are charged with spreading the seeds of the kingdom of heaven, regardless the size of the seeds. The seeds themselves will grow into something great.
