My Walk Through the Book of Mark by Annette Godtland

The Parable of the Growing Seed (Mark 4:26-29)

26And He said, "The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground, 27and should sleep by night and rise by day, and the seed should sprout and grow, he himself does not know how. 28For the earth yields crops by itself: first the blade, then the head, after that the full grain in the head. 29But when the grain ripens, immediately he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come."

Here it is talking about the Kingdom of God. When I used to hear the phrase the Kingdom of God, I thought of heaven. But since then, I had heard someone else's opinion that the Kingdom of God refers to God's presence with us. So I am now starting to think of the Kingdom of God as everything over which God reigns. Which is everything around me.

There are many times when I really look around me that I can see God's presence in my life. He surrounds me with wonders. He helps when I do not even think of asking for help. I do not deserve what God has given me. I cannot control it. I do not fully understand it. It is just there, continuing to shape me and everything around me. Just as the seed in the parable continues to grow even while the man sleeps, God's presence continues to grow even when I am not focused on Him. But I still get to reap all the benefits of it!

So is this parable telling us to simply let God's Kingdom take care of itself? I don't think so. Note, this parable starts with a man scattering seed. I think it is our job to help scatter the seed. And note, it doesn't say to find the best soil and plant the seed there, but to scatter the seed.

Ever wonder if what you say or do might have an impact on someone else? Sometimes it seems like it is very difficult to make what you say or do bear fruit. But the wonder of this is that with God's help, the seed will grow. We are to plant the seed. God will take care of the rest.
