My Walk Through the Book of Mark by Annette Godtland

The Twelve Apostles (Mark 3:13-19)

13And He went up on the mountain and called to Him those He Himself wanted. And they came to Him. 14Then He appointed twelve, that they might be with Him and that He might send them out to preach, 15and to have power to heal sicknesses and to cast out demons: 16Simon, to whom He gave the name Peter; 17James the son of Zebedee and John the brother of James, to whom He gave the name Boanerges, that is, "Sons of Thunder"; 18Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Cananite; 19and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed Him. And they went into a house.

I was just noticing the unique way these people were given these responsibilities. Jesus went up the mountain, then he called those He wanted, then they came to him. So He left them and they weren't in His presence when He called them. It is interesting that before, when He asked them to follow him, He asked them directly. But here, to be his apostles, they had to hear Jesus calling while not in His presence, and had to decide whether or not to follow that calling.

Also, it sounds like many were called, but 12 were appointed to preach, heal sicknesses and cast out demons. Not everyone who was called was to be given these abilities and responsibilities. I also wouldn't be surprised if not everyone responded who was called.

I believe the same is true today. Many of us are called for various tasks, though not all are given the same abilities and responsibilities. No callings are better than any others. Do we listen for and hear our calling? Jesus calls those who He Himself wants. Jesus allows us to make the choice whether or not we follow our calling. But unless we come when Jesus calls, we will never know the awesome work he wants us to do for him.
